latest PST animations

Here are my recent PST animations starting with ones from the 22 December 2011. I must add that this is just a standard PST with no modifications. I am located at present at a camp site near Cabo De Gata, Almeria Spain, I am only one 1k from the sea and the sun is over it all day giving very stable thermal conditions. Most of what you see is as a result of excellent seeing conditions. If only I had brought my big kit with me!

21 February 2012 here is a huge prominence on the South-East limb the sequence is between 10-40 and 11-44UT. Seeing grade 1 to grade 2. The image should be rotated counter-clockwise by about 12 degrees to correspond to the correct orientation on the Sun.

28 January 2012 here are some post flare loops on the north west limb possibly associated with the X1.8-class flare from the 27 January 2012 at approximately 18-50UT, that was a very long duration event. Sequence seen here is from 09-48 to 10-30UT. Seeing grade 1.

26 January 2012 here is a look at AR1402 as it approaches the north west limb. There is a post flare loop above it that was part of the after effect of a C2.7-class flare event that I just missed. Sequence from 10-40 to 11-32UT in seeing grade 1 conditions.

22 January 2012 here is a long duration C3.7-class flare across the AR1402 AR1401 region captured between 11-39 and 12-39UT. The huge filament structure remains to the right of the frame. Seeing conditions grade 1.

21 January 2012, here is a long look at the huge filament and AR1402 and AR1401 complex, this structure initially appeared to be lifting off but I was wrong. I imaged every minute but only every tenth frame is animated here. Sequence between 10-03 and 12-33UT seeing grade 1.

20 January 2012, here a small B-class flare breaks across AR1407 between 10-41 and 11-07UT, seeing grade 1.

18 January 2012 here I caught the huge prominence as it started to lift off sequence between 11-21 and 13-25UT. Seeing grade 1.

18 Jan 2012 here is AR1401 and AR1402 complex showing a C2.4-class flare sequence between 09-42 and 10-46UT. Seeing grade 1.

18 January 2011 here is the same huge prominence between 09-25 and 11-03UT seeing grade 1. It is interesting to compare the changed dynamics of this structure from the day earlier [image below].

17 January 2012 here is a huge prominence on the north-west limb sequence between 12-26 and 14-14UT. Seeing grade 1. Hand tracking on alt azimuth mount, this is one of three consecutive sequences.

14 January 2012 here is a look at emerging active regions AR1402 top left limb and AR1402 bottom left limb together with AR1396 between 10-10 and 11-10UT. Seeing grade 1 and alt-azimuth mount used.

14 January 2012 here is a look at a very active filament close to the south-east limb between 10-11 and 11-11UT in seeing grade 1. This was filmed at the same time as the sequence above

14 January 2012 here is a look at a large prominence form 13-18 to 14-45UT, I have slightly over exposed it to pick out and monitor the movements of the fine details within this very complex and dynamic structure. This is one of five animation runs that I have captured but lots of processing still to do. Seeing grade 1 but gusting winds 30mph.

10 January 2012 here a another look at AR1391 and AR1393 for the third consecutive day through thin cloud this time. Sequence from 15-27 to 16-11UT.

9 January 2011 here is another look at AR1391 and 1393 between 10-42 and 11-41UT. A C1.1-class flare can be seen. Seeing grade 1 and was hand tracking on alt-azimuth mount again.

8 January here is a look at AR1391 [left] and growing sunspot AR1393 between 10-45 and 11-24UT. Hand tracked on alt-azimuth mount seeing conditions grade 1.

5 January 2011 here is another look at the hedgerow prominence together with AR1391 and this time I have reduced the exposure levels to pull out the surface details. Seeing grade 1 sequence between 15-20 and 16-12UT.

4 January 2012 here is a large hedgerow prominence on the North East limb between 15-25 and 16-23UT seeing conditions grade 1. I was hand tracking on an alt-azimuth mount so corrected for field rotation in Photoshop CS5 just prior to animating.

3 January 2012 here is a large filament near to the South East limb the sequence runs from 13-25 to 14-15UT, seeing grade 1 conditions. Alt-azimuth mount used, corrected for field rotation prior to animation in Photoshop CS5. I was actually imaging three separate areas at the same time.

1 January 2012 here is a look at AR1389 and AR1388 between 11-01 and 11-29UT in grade 1 seeing conditions. Alt-azimuth mount used.

31 December 2011 the Sun was only a few degrees above the horizon and thin clouds but here is the last flare of 2011 it was an M1.5-class flare and the movie runs between 16-12 and 16-35UT with the sun setting locally at 17-01UT. I also videoed this and got the green flash of the last sunset for 2011. Used alt azimuth mount and not corrected fully for field rotation.

30 December 2011 here a C8.4-class flare breaks across AR1389 the sequence runs from 10-29 to 10-55UT, seeing grade 2.

28 December 2011 here is AR1384 when a C4-class flare breaks across it the sequence is from 13-42 to 14-14UT in grade 1 seeing conditions. This was the end of 4 hours imaging. Hand tracking on alt azimuth mount and for first time used hand tracking to simultaneously record two separate active regions. Corrected for field rotation while animating in photoshop CS5.

27 December 2011 here is a plasma loop being thrown up by AR1387 between 10-56 and 11-24UT, seeing grade 1.

27 December 2011 here a C6.2-class flare breaks across AR1387 sequence between 12-00 and 13-00UT, seeing grade 1. I was hand tracking using an alt azimuth mount so corrected for field rotation while animating in Photoshop CS5. This was the last hour of 3 1/2 hours data gathering.

24 December 2011 here is AR1183 and AR1184 complex between 13-45 and 14-13UT in grade 1 seeing conditions.

24 December 2011 just got back from Christmas shopping and took a look at the Sun, there was a huge prominence ejection on the NW limb so within 2 minutes I had the DMK21 into my PST on alt/azimuth mount. Here is one hours worth of activity between 12-42 and 13-42UT. It was not a CME as the plasma has fallen back to the surface and some post flare looping. I probably just missed the main event here. Seeing grade 1. Had to correct for 12 degrees of field rotation in Photoshop CS5.

23 December 2011 here is AR1183 and 1184 complex shortly before sunset between 15-51 and 16-13UT. Alt azimuth mount and some field rotation, seeing grade 3. A plasma loop can be seen to lift off.

22 December 2011, there were no clouds and I was spoiled for choice so I decided to shoot three separate active areas over roughly the same time period. I was capturing successive sequences of the same area every three minutes. I was tracking from one area to the next using my old EQ5 mount. It took a lot of concentration for two hours and I have processed and presented frames at 6-minute intervals to keep the movies small enough to run straight on the website.

22 December 2011, here is AR1382 and 1381 complex between 10-53 and 12-17UT. Seeing grade 1. The frames are presented at 6-minute intervals.
